Aya Kakeda was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and is based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work is widely influenced by folk art and folktales, and reflects the current world from her personal perspective. Similar to the cautionary tales found in folklore, She creates mystical characters and place them in seemingly utopian surroundings that show, with a closer look, a distorted reflection of our own world. She has produced art for books, products, magazines, posters, and store installations from clients all over the world.
Her appeared in NIKE, Delta, Disney Hyperion Books, KidRobot, The New York Times, The New Yorker Magazine,Plan Sponsors Magazine, Macy's, HongKong Mega Mall, etc. Aya Also takes her imaginary friends to travel, exhibiting in galleries and museums throughout the world. She has won Illustration Medals by Society of Illustrators, SILA, Print Magazine, and 3x3 Illustration. She is a faculty at School of visual Arts and Fashion Institute of Technology. |
