Nancy Willis Smith is an artist born near Chicago and living and working in New York City. Her work explores inherent discords between mankind and nature, reality and perception and the cosmos and consciousness. Smith collages and paintings juxtapose surreal images in striking settings with beautiful textures, colors and structural backgrounds. A defining characteristic of her three-dimensional works is the inclusion of curious and extraordinary objects, including ammonites, monkey ferns, broken piano parts and old chandelier orbs. Many of Smith's pieces, including her Whirling Dervishes series, are inspired by extraordinary events she experienced while living in Qatar and working throughout the Middle East and North Africa before and during the Arab Spring.
